Food allergies are fast becoming more common across the world. Among these, an estimated 66 million people in North America and Europe have some form of intolerance to gluten, a protein found in common grains such as wheat, barley and rye.
Unfortunately for those living with gluten intolerance, the only treatment is avoidance. But since gluten is found in all kinds of food, often even where you wouldn’t expect it, even avoidance can be a challenge. This is where Nima - the world’s first portable gluten sensor - comes in.
Nima was founded by Shireen Yates and Scott Sundvor, who have both long struggled with food allergies and sensitivities, and who’ve had plenty of experience with the frustrations of dining out, not knowing if the food they ordered was truly safe to eat. Out of that struggle, Nima was born.
Nima lets you test your food anywhere, anytime. It can test for the presence of gluten with extreme accuracy in nearly all types of foods in under three minutes time (some limitations apply - refer to FAQs).
And it's backed by science. Nima’s antibody-based chemistry was developed by MIT scientists to be faster, cheaper, and usable right at the dinner table. The capsules included in this starter kit contain these specially designed antibodies that bind to gluten protein to allow Nima to detect it. Nima is optimised to detect 20 ppm (parts per million) of gluten, the standard for labelling a food item as gluten-free.
